This cost differential is because of the methods used in each type of printing, with one method being cheaper than the other because it is quicker to set up.

Screen printing t-shirts

This method is costly to set up because the image is transferred to the fabric using a separate screen or stencil for each of the individual colours. This usually limits the number of colours in the design to just 3 or 4, which creates a more hand crafted appearance compared to a photo quality finish, which is necessary for most complex designs.

If you have large orders, then the setup costs can appear pretty minimal compared to the overall cost of the total order, so this might not be a problem to you.

Digital fabric printing

The reason why this method is cheaper than screen printing for t-shirts, is because there is no extensive set up. You just load your design to the computer, send it to the printer and your design is printed onto the transfer or fabric. Using this method for small, customised orders, which is the type of order we receive from most businesses, allows you to have printed apparel at a fraction of the cost, compared to using screen printing for your t-shirts.
